We (East) Asian-Americans Need To Do More About dismantling Anti-Blackness

George Floyd's murder at the hands of Police officers in Minneapolis has exploded in protests across the country and even the world.

This is a time to reflect on ourselves as a country and as a community, and also educate ourselves about the systems we are a part of and how they oppress Black Americans. It says so much about non-Black poc communities when a Hmong-American officer stands guard, complicit in cold murder all because an Arab-American owned store called the cops on Floyd. Asian-Americans wouldn't be in this country without the efforts of Black activists who bled to allow immigration from Asian countries, repealing the near centuries long racist anti-Asian immigration law.

We benefit from the work done by the Black community, and to sit on the sidelines, complicit in a murder of a Black man in cold blood is unacceptable.

We, as a community (yes, I know that all Asian-American ethnic groups are talking about this, but as an East Asian-American man, I have to direct my attention to my own racial group) have to educate ourselves more about the oppression done towards Black people.

I will admit, I have not been the best ally when it comes to these things. I have been ignorant, and because of this, I need to unlearn past assumptions stimulated by my own community. I need to educate myself on these injustices that I perpetuate. I am not a perfect human, but that does not mean I cannot grow.

If you are reading this, and you are a non-Black POC, especially Asian-American:

  1. Watch Hasan Minhaj's video about our role in this.

2. Donate to fundraisers for Black Americans.

3. Educate ourselves about the systems non-Black communities uphold, and learn to criticize and dismantle them.

  • Anti-Blackness and colorism

  • Systemic racism in our education system

4. Sign Petitions

5. Have discussions with people in our community, especially about anti-Blackness!

6. Check in with Black friends.

...And remember: Black people are not obligated to teach our everything. We must also educate ourselves.
